Members of the Lafayette Community,

You may be aware that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a heat advisory for the Lehigh Valley from noon today until 8 PM on Wednesday night. The heat index will be between 100 and 104 degrees with the peak impacts in the afternoon today and tomorrow.

From NOAA: A Heat Advisory means that a period of excessively hot humid weather is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which there is an increased risk for heat related health issues. Drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned environment, if possible. Be sure to check on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or late evening hours. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. The CDC

As a reminder, the hours for Skillman Library are 7:30 am – 1:00 am (Monday-Thursday). The Kirby Recreation Center is open 6:00 am – Midnight (Monday-Friday), Bailey’s Health Center is open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm (Monday-Thursday) and for the next 48 hours, the FARINON COLLEGE CENTER WILL REMAIN OPEN CONTINUOUSLY for those who require a cool place to study or relax overnight. Students in residence halls who are experiencing heat-related discomfort should alert your Resident Adviser who can help direct you to a location where you can receive additional assistance.

There are storms in the forecast for tomorrow evening and the humidity should decrease after that time, but we will communicate with you again if the heat advisory remains in effect past Thursday at 8:00 PM.
